Nov. 11th, 2009

Sick again much of today. Walked to Walgreens to buy orange juice (on sale!) for me and saline nasal wash for Shannon, listening to The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe while I walked.

Finished The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe while doing laundry. The book felt like shorthand to me, with everything happening amazingly fast. They meet someone for the first time ... and a few pages later he's dying and I'm obviously supposed to feel something as a result. It left me cold. The only part I really liked was the statues coming back to life.

I didn't really read many kids' books when I was a kid (one of the reasons I'm listening to Narnia now). Maybe this is just a characteristic of kids' books. Never slow down to develop characters, emotions, situations, etc. Just plow from one event to another.

Now I'm moving on to The Horse and His Boy, which Shannon tells me is the best of the Narnia books to read second.

I'm waiting for the library to get the books I requested a couple weeks ago.

Been watching a lot of NCIS. I think I have a crush on the female Israeli assassin.

Tomorrow I'm going out to lunch with Katherine and Jay to celebrate Jay's birthday, and then I have school that night.

Are you listening to them in order? I like The Magician's Nephew, but I have always hated The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. I like ALL of the Narnia books better than that one.

I'm listening to them in the order that Shannon suggests. The Wikipedia page says that the proper order is hotly debated.

it's not just childrens books
and it's not just you - I remember reading an essay or blog by some writer recently (can't remember who or where) who found that the Narnia books didn't hold up well in adulthood.

Have you read the The Chronicles of Prydain series by Lloyd Alexander? You might enjoy that more. Wonderful books. (Time to reread!)
