Daughter of the Blood

Finished reading Daughter of the Blood today, and overall I liked it. The characters interest me and the plot pulled me along just fine. The only problem I have with it is a certain degree of fanficness, or what feels to me like fanficness. Especially the male sexual slavery. Male sexual slavery, with bouts of torture, reads to me like bad fanfic. Maybe fanfic got it from books like this, rather than the other way around, but the similarity is there.

I've immediately dived into the second book in the trilogy, where I see that the characters the first book made me care about now loathe each other due to misunderstandings. Sigh.

This makes the books sound bad, and I don't think they are. I'm definitely enjoying them. I just do see some problems.

wow, that was FAST.

I haven't been online so I thought I'd check your LJ to see if you'd had a chance to start the books. You read really fast!

I know what you mean about the sex slave thing. It's one of the reasons why it's so hard for me to get any friends to read it because everyone balks at that part of the plot.

I do love the characters though, and one of the main fascinations for me is the way she takes "real" religion and kind of messes with your mind. I love Sataen to itty bitty pieces. And the way he feels about Janelle and the other 'kids' really makes me wish I could just give him a big old hug.

I read fast because I have no job. All I do is read and go to the gym.

In the first book, I was bugged by the sex slavery and by the child rape. Both seemed so sensational and sleezy, you know? But the second book has been light on the sex slavery and pretty much lacking in the child rape, so I've been glad.

Yes, I love Saetan and Lucivar and Daemon. It took me a while to warm up to Daemon, but when he was living in the (horrible) house with Jaenelle for so long he really won me over.

Now I've got about 100 pages left in the second book, and all the characters are starting to mend their broken relationships. I expected to be annoyed by the misunderstandings, but I wasn't. I'm not sure why. Still, I'm glad to see people reconnecting. I'll probably finish the second book (Heir to the Shadows, I think it is) tomorrow.

If you like the characters I definitely recommend "Dreams Made Flesh". It's 3 short stories that follow up the trilogy.

It's my favorite of all the stories involved in the universe mostly because I love Lucivar's story a lot.
