I finished reading The Time Traveler's Wife today, and I adored it. It managed to be romantic without embarrassing itself with soppy cliches, I genuinely cared about the main characters, and the time travel was always interesting. It may be my favorite book I've read so far this year.

Then I started Anne Bishop's Daughter of the Blood tonight, and I'm enjoying it quite a bit. I haven't read all that much of it yet, but it's off to a good start. I like the characters, which is always important to me.

Yay! I'm glad you liked The Time-Traveller's Wife, because I liked it so very much. So it's good to see other people enjoy it, too.

Did the whole baby subplot creep you out? It bothered me intensely.

The entire motivating force of nearly half the book is to see if these two people can deliberately make a horribly crippled baby girl, sure to be raped and murdered at a young age because of her curse. When the husband suggests they should just adopt, his wife replies that that would be "a betrayal." No further explanation necessary. But it's all OK, because at the end it mentions that they got an anti-time-traveller-discrimination ordinance passed or something.

It wasn't impossible to understand, though, because the writing is really good at giving even a male reader the sense of a woman's fierce sensual desire to be pregnant, to be filled up with a baby by the man she truly loves. Maybe love means never having to say "you're being totally irrational!!"

I really liked a lot of other things about the book, however. What a mind-bender! And it had such tangled yet neat resolutions to so much plot complexity. I think I'm just allergic to certain kinds of "romance." It's like fetish porn; a story that succeeds because it presses certain satisfying buttons really well can seem thin and uncomfortable if they're not your buttons.

Oh, I'm so glad you loved it! I really liked it, too, even though it had me sobbing by the end.
