Had to take Munchkin to the vet today because she seems to have some kind of urinary tract infection. As always, she found the trip to the vet very traumatic. Then we forced medicine down her throat. Not a good day in Munchkinland.

The cats have had more health problems in the last year than in the previous 12 years I had them. I guess it's partially that they're getting older.

My cat Pepper has to take a pill daily for his kidneys (they're crapping out on him) and the absolute only way I can get pills in him is to use Pill Pockets. If you have to give more pills to Munchkin, it might be a good idea to check them out. It's way less stressful than forcing the pills down their throats -- Pepper is huge, and I can't stomach wrestling him to get medicine in him... I've only ever sucessfully given him liquid antibiotics and eye medicine, never a pill.

The antibiotics we're giving Munchkin are actually in liquid form. She hates it, but I think it's a lot easier than a pill.

Poor Munchkin! Hope the little kitty gets to feeling better soon!

She seems to be fine now, and the vet said she didn't have a UTI (according to the tests), so we have no idea why she had a day of weird behavior. As I've said to Shannon, maybe she's just getting weird as she gets older.

They're 12 already? Wow! Then again, I was surprised a few years ago when I figured out my cats were in their late teens — no wonder they weren't as spry!

If the UTIs are recurrent, there are "special" foods for that (available at the grocery/pet store) that aren't much more expensive and are effective at preventing more infections.

They're actually turning 13 in a couple of weeks. How time flies! I remember when I could cup Munchkin in one hand.

We give T & B a pill for thyroid twice a day. We feed them immediately afterwards, delicious (stinky, nauseating, if you're me) wet food, so they don't seem to mind too much. They'll be 16 in May and are still doing pretty well.

Giving them canned food afterward is a good idea. Maybe Shannon and I should try that (though we don't normally give them wet food), since Munchkin is supposed to have food with her medication anyway.

We mostly started doing that to help them keep their weight up in their old age. Aging can make it difficult to wrest nutrients from one's food, and overactive thyroid can compound that problem. But the fact that they enjoy it seems to help, too.
