This weekend I sat down and read Edith Pattou's East, which is a re-telling of the "East o' the Sun, West o' the Moon" fairy tale. I decided to stop reading To Say Nothing of the Dog, and I enjoyed this much more. "East o' the Sun, West o' the Moon" has always been one of my favorite fairy tales -- perhaps my single favorite -- partially because the hero of the story is a woman who is saving a man, rather than the other way around, and anyway I find polar bears interesting. I almost always enjoy novel-length re-tellings of fairy tales, and this one was no exception.

Thank you to Joyce, who sent me the book ages ago!

Now I'm going to re-read Mary Doria Russell's The Sparrow, immediately followed by the sequel, Children of God. Good books.
