The Falling Woman

Read The Falling Woman (by Pat Murphy) today, and it was perfect Halloween reading, since it is essentially a ghost story. It's the story of an archaeologist who sees shadows of the past, and while working at Mayan ruins she encounters one such shadow -- a Mayan priestess who lived and died around 900 A.D. -- who actually interacts with her. At the center of the book is the complex relationship between the archaeologist and her adult daughter, both of whom are interesting characters. In the latter half of the book, the gradually building sense of menace became increasingly scary as the Mayan priestess becomes increasingly creepy. There's a lot about human sacrifice, and I hope I don't have nightmares.

I'm not sure what I'm going to read next. I'm leaning toward To Say Nothing of the Dog by Connie Willis, because I loved Doomsday Book.
