Books, mostly

Got on an Ursula Le Guin kick yesterday, after we watched a made-for-tv film of The Lathe of Heaven from the 1970s. The film was pretty good -- except for the last 10 minutes or so, which were nonsensically psychedelic -- but its main effect on me was to remind me how much I liked The Left Hand of Darkness, though the two stories have almost nothing in common except author. I remember loving The Left Hand of Darkness and staying up all night reading it, crying, though I remember next to nothing about the plot. I got a bug in my ear to re-read it, but I've lost my copy somewhere along the line, and so recruited Shannon and went to Moe's on a mission. I found a copy there for a dollar, as well as a copy of The Dispossessed (by the same author), which I don't think I've ever read, for 90 cents. Bought both and placed them on my (rather crowded) to-be-read shelf, with a plan to read The Left Hand of Darkness when I finish The Well of Lost Plots.

Speaking of The Well of Lost Plots, I haven't been enjoying it very much, so it's been a slow read. It contains too many characters, and I've had a tough time keeping them straight. Plus, there has been very little plot. I'm almost finished now -- I'll finish today -- and some plot has finally shown up, so it's quicker reading now, but it's a bit late in the game. I adored the first two books in the series (Jasper Fforde's Thursday Next series), but this one has been a bit of a let-down. In the first two books, Thursday was working as a detective, but in this book she isn't, and I hadn't realized how much I enjoyed that aspect of the books until it was gone. In this book, she's living in the BookWorld -- inside books, interacting with fictional characters -- which sounds in theory more interesting than it has been in practice. She has mostly wandered from one thing to another, without any forward momentum. I'm now interested in seeing how it turns out, but it isn't something I will re-read, which I probably will the first two books.

Also went out to dinner with Shannon on a whim. Went to Oscar's for a greasy burger. Would have preferred some vegetables, but it was still good. Their lemonade and ketchup both taste funny.

Later we watched another episode of the first season of Heroes, which we've been re-watching from the beginning. So much more exciting than season 2. I predict that if they get Hiro and Ando back together soon in season 2, things will improve. And flying boy needs to turn out to be evil, because otherwise he's just annoying.

Anyway, nothing exciting going on. Looking forward to finishing The Well of Lost Plots and picking up The Left Hand of Darkness, but nothing else going on. I have another proofreading project starting soon, but I'm not sure when. They said "end of October," and it's that already.
