Today is Shannon's birthday. (Insert song here.) When we got groceries last night, we bought a cake at my suggestion, but Shannon decided that it would be more cost effective to buy the gargantuan, full-sized cake, rather than the small, two-person one. I don't find this more cost effective, because we don't need more cake, so spending the additional money -- even if it's a proportionately small amount of money -- is a waste. And I don't eat a lot of sweets, so he's going to be stuck with a hell of a lot of cake, but I asked to make sure that's what he really wanted to do and he said yes, so there you have it.
In my family, it's traditional to eat a slice of birthday cake for breakfast on the day after your birthday, but this cake will be either gone or stale by the time my birthday rolls around on Wednesday (or, rather, the day after my birthday on Thursday), so I put a slice in the freezer.
My mom always made me a "Tunnel of Fudge" Bundt cake on my birthday, but that now sounds kind of gross. (Not the cake itself, which is good, but the name. It sounds like a euphemism.) It was a very moist cake, unlike the one we bought from Andronico's yesterday, which is just okay. It's a little dry and has too much frosting for my tastes. I'm more of a cake fan than a frosting fan. Frosting is usually too too too sweet. The Tunnel of Fudge cake that my mom used to make for me had glaze instead of frosting, which is excellent. Maybe I'll make one myself someday. I think my mom may have made it from a mix.
