Yesterday, Shannon noticed that there was a noticeable electrical current running through our shower head and other tub/shower fixtures in the BRAND NEW FUCKING BATHROOM. Ahem. Breathe in, breathe out. Right. Like I was saying: the lovely new bathroom.

Anyway, so I emailed our (increasingly abhorred) contractor a calm message about the problem, telling him what was going on and saying that I assumed it had been caused by something during the remodel. He responded with two fairly long paragraphs about how they did nothing wrong and it was a problem with our house, not their work, but he'd be willing to come out and do an inspection of our house's electrical system if I liked. Maybe next week.

Despite the fact that this problem did not exist before they remodeled our bathroom, I was willing to accept the possibility that the problem might be with our house and not with their work (our house is very old and previous owners did all kinds of wacky makeshift repairs, so who knows what's possible?), but I was pretty fucking pissed that he just flatly stated that it wasn't his fault without even investigating. Seriously?

Might I point out that we have discovered, all along the way, many many problems that were caused by his crew's shoddy workmanship? So it's not like the idea of them making a mistake is ridiculous.

So I didn't email him back immediately to say, "Fuck you and your offer to kindly inspect our electrical system about which you apparently know nothing." Instead, I phoned an electrician and had them send someone out to figure out what was going on. It took the guy more than 2 hours of investigation, but eventually he did:

Ting's workers had pinched a wire when they installed the new ceiling fan. They'd screwed a clamp tightly down on a cable that contained a bunch of wires, and the metal clamp had bitten right through all the protective coating and such, and bit right through to bright copper wire, resulting in 8 volts of electricity coursing all through our tub and fixtures any time the fan was on. Not a lot of electricity -- nobody got electrocuted -- but it's supposed to be 0 volts, not 8.

Yep. Not Ting's fault at all. Obviously. It must be something wrong with our house.

Anyway, so the friendly electrician re-stripped the wires in question, replaced the offending clamp with a rubber/plastic one that cannot damage wires, put everything back together as it should have been in the first place, and we were done.

And I went on Yelp! and deleted my glowing review of Ting's contracting business.

It's bad enough when someone does poor work, but when they then proceed to shirk responsibility, I get mad.
