Where stuff comes from, looking back

For some reason, I got to thinking today about the things various people have introduced into my life ... for better or for worse. Some of these things became long-term interests ... and some not so much.

my mom: too many to list, but including fine art (esp. Monet, van Gogh, Picasso, Canaletto, Alma-Tadema, etc.), The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Stephen King, Shakespeare, museums (of all sorts), Europe and Great Britain, libraries, true crime, independent film, mythology, Celtic music

my dad: too many to list, but including many vegetables (esp. summer squash), Kurt Vonnegut, the Sword of Shannara series, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Kris Kristofferson, Brian Froud, Cribbage (card game),

John (junior high and high school neighbor and close friend): Depeche Mode

Lisa (high school best friend): historical romance novels

Bethany (college roommate): "Days of Our Lives," Disney's The Little Mermaid, "The Cat in the Hat" (cartoon), "What's Opera, Doc?"

Donald (one-time boyfriend and long-time close friend): Monty Python, Umberto Eco, Zachary's Pizza, Spike and Mike's Festival of Animation (incl. Wallace and Grommet, and that little dog who always popped the balloons on stage), The Blues Brothers

Michelle (friend): The House Jacks

Dave (momentary boyfriendish thing and long-time friend): Jonathan Richman, Liz Phair, The Pogues, Daniel Pinkwater

Ross (asshole and briefly non-boyfriend): Loudon Wainwright III

Katherine (close friend and sometime housemate): dim sum, Crowded House, Dar Williams, Ryan Adams, Manu Chao, Jonathan Coulton, Mark Helprin's Winter's Tale, Trader Joe's, tapas, "tao hou tod" (and perhaps tofu in general), jook (rice porridge), eggplant, The East Bay Depot for Creative Reuse, hummus

Jay (boyfriend for a while, but close friend for many more years since): meteor showers, Jackie Chan, Blondie's Pizza, Macintosh computers

Zed (boyfriend for a while): Rebecca Riots

Janet (close friend): latkes, bulgur wheat, Greens restaurant

Andrew (close friend): High Tech Burrito, Baja Fresh

Lisa (close friend): borscht, gazpacho, The Chronicles of Narnia, lots and lots of anime (esp. "Paradise Kiss," "Fruits Basket," etc.), xkcd, lots of unfamiliar food (nothing comes to mind at the moment)

Lisa (sister-in-law): "Project Runway," "Top Chef"

Shannon (duh): too many to list, but including "Doctor Who," "The Prisoner," Joss Whedon, Neil Gaiman, Gene Wolfe, Robin Hobb, many many many games (esp. Dominion), swimming in the ocean, Rumiko Takahashi

You left out Chef Jia! That's what I think of when I think of Andrew :-)

Anyway, neat list...

I had completely forgotten Chef Jia's! Now I remember there was a really popular Chinese restaurant next door, with people always waiting to get in, and we all marveled that they didn't just go to Chef Jia's instead. I don't remember what we used to order there, but I do remember liking the food.

For you, I also listed Dave's Coffee Shop and the Parkway Theater ... but both are gone now!

I also remember going to J.J.'s (formerly Biff's) often after dancing in the city (New Wave City rocks! Or, at least, it *did* for a while.), until it closed and we started going to Sparky's ... but I don't remember who first suggested those places.

Chef Jia's is still there, AFAIK. Their kid is all grown up. Let's go back sometime! Remember when we all played Deprivation at my apartment until the wee hours and then went to JJs? You had a great deprivation answer that can't be mention here but I'll never forget. All the dudes had to lose a point.

Yeah, I wanna go back to Chef Jia's! Um, we're away all summer, but sometime before the end of 2011!!! Let's make a plan...

Funny, I don't remember me having any dramatic Deprivation answers that night. I remember that Dave Librik was there and shocked everyone by stating that he had never eaten a PB&J sandwich and he had never learned to swim, and I stated that I'd never had a driver's license, but that's pretty much all I remember.
