The Plague!

Quite sick today. Wretched cold/flu! And I got a flu shot this year, too! I find myself doubting its efficacy.

Shannon and I have canceled our birthday celebration dinner at Millennium tomorrow night. I'm not really in any shape to go gallivanting all over town, enjoying fancy food, so it makes more sense to go when we'll both be able to fully enjoy it. I may also cancel my weekly plans with Lisa on Saturday -- I'll see how I'm feeling tomorrow evening.

When I felt a little better in the middle of the day today (after some spicy green curry for lunch), I walked a couple miles up to Walgreens to pick up a prescription and some random stuff we needed for the house (cat litter, Nyquil, t.p., etc.), because I was feeling very annoyed at the whole invalid experience, tired of being the helpless shut-in in the House of Many Dirty Kleenexes. I wanted some fresh air and some exercise. But I ended up completely *exhausted* on the way home. Have you ever been walking a really far distance, and you get so tired that you just put your head down and place one foot in front of the other, over and over, sure that if you can just keep doing that, eventually you will get where you are going and be able to stop and collapse? That's what it was like. I was in a sort of delirious stupor, just staggering through the back streets of south Berkeley. Coughing occasionally. And getting rained on.

In retrospect, it may not have been the wisest course of action, but my prescription was about to run out, and Shannon wasn't able to go to Walgreens for me.

So I didn't do much today but sleep. Occasionally punctuated by coughing or gasping for air. I tried to drink lots of liquids. I'm hoping tomorrow will be better. I'm going stir-crazy!

ETA: Shocking idea: I could have taken a *cab* home from Walgreens! That would have made a lot of sense, but I'm not used to such luxuries.

I'm sure you already know this, but the flu vaccine only works against the most common types of flu, and not at all against colds. So it's more likely that what you have is the "wrong" type of illness, not that the flu vaccine itself is ineffective. I started getting them 20-25 years ago and haven't had the flu (previously an annual occurrence) since. Your mileage, of course, may vary. And whatever you have, I hope you feel better soon.

I probably wouldn't have thought of taking a cab, either. In Alameda, you can pretty much only get one by calling way in advance, and they'll cancel on you if you don't want to go all the way to the airport or some far-away destination. It's pretty sad.
