Last week I noticed that the magnolia trees have started blooming rather dramatically, and today I noticed quite a few white blossoms on the fruit trees along my walk in north Berkeley. Shall I start humming "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas"? or maybe "It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Springtime"?

I'm nearly finished with Zafón's The Shadow of the Wind, and I'm not nearly as impressed now as I was after reading the first 50 pp. or so. I thought it was a book about books, writing, authors, and obsession with all these things, but it turns out that the whole "book" thing is just a MacGuffin, with the true focus being lurid soap opera of the amnesia/coma/secret sibling variety. The lines between good and bad are about as subtle as those in a 1950's Superman comic. Now that I'm so near the end, the story reminds me rather more of Gothic novels (such as Matthew Lewis's delightfully absurd The Monk) than of any modern literature I've read. So I'm rather disappointed with how it all turned out, but such is life. I would no longer recommend the book.
