Buffy Thoughts

Shannon and I were watching "Consequences" on the Buffy season 3 DVD tonight, and I was amazed at how much of the dialogue seemed related to plot events -- and even particular snippets of dialogue -- in seasons 6 and 7. Here are some of the examples of stuff I noticed.

- - - - - - - - - - -

Ep. 3.15, "Consequences"
Faith: Buffy, I'm not gonna *see* anything. I missed the mark last night and I'm sorry about the guy. I really am! But it happens! Anyway, how many people do you think we've saved by now, thousands? And didn't you stop the world from ending? Because in my book, that puts you and me in the plus column.

Ep. 6.13, "Dead Things"
Buffy: A girl is dead because of me.

Spike: And how many people are alive because of you? How many have you saved? One dead girl doesn't tip the scale.

Ep. 3.15, "Consequences"
Faith: Something made us different. We're warriors. We're built to kill.

Buffy: To kill demons! But it does *not* mean that we get to pass judgment on people like we're better than everybody else!

Faith: We *are* better!

Ep. 7.07, "Conversations With Dead People"
Buffy: Sometimes I feel — this is awful — I feel like I'm better than them ... superior.

Ep. 3.15, "Consequences"
Xander: Faith, come on. I came here to help you. I thought we had a connection.

Faith: You wanna feel a connection? It's just skin. I see ... I want ... I take. I forget.

Xander: No. No, wait. It was *more* than that.

As compared to Buffy and Spike's relationship throughout Season 6, including the near-rape in Ep. 6.19, "Seeing Red."

Ep. 3.15, "Consequences"
Faith: What bugs you is you know I'm right. You know in your gut we don't need the law. We *are* the law.

Buffy: No.

Faith: Yes. You know exactly what I'm about 'cause you have it in you, too.

Buffy: No, Faith, you're sick.

Ep. 7.05, "Selfless"
Buffy: Human rules don't apply! There's only me. I am the law.

I had previously commented to Shannon that I was interested to see how Faith and Buffy might relate now, since they've both changed so much since they last interacted. I think Buffy has found out that there's a lot more of Faith's darkness in her than she ever realized. And, though I haven't watched those episodes of "Angel" yet, I've gathered that Faith has managed to find more of Buffy's "goodness" in herself, as well.

Anyway, I don't have any huge conclusions to draw, or any earth-shattering philosophies about what it all means. I was just interested in these similarities, and wanted to share them. :)

You know, you're very right. When I was watching these episodes, I had a lot of the same thoughts cross my mind, but I didn't quite make the same connections. But you're exactly right -- Buffy has turned into Faith in a lot of ways. It should be very interesting for Faith and Buffy to meet again -- I'm looking forward to that.

And not only because I really, really, really want to see how much sexual tension James Marsters and Eliza Dushku can pull up together. Really. ;)

You ain't whistling dixie! I'd love to see those two these two in a scene together, because I can't help but think the chemisty'd be amazing.

Scenes from "Consequences" (those scenes you quoted, even) were part of the presentation my Feminism professor gave last semester on Buffy and Ethics; came out of her essay for the "Buffy and Philosophy" book. It was really interesting. Faith was brought up to show an obvious Utilitarian (your first quote sums that up really nicely), and there was a bunch of other stuff that I can't remember right now.

Umm... yeah, get the book, 'cause I can't pull this stuff out of my butt.
