Read The Forgotten Beasts of Eld today and was blown away. I originally was given the book by a friend because it was her favorite book and she wanted to share it with me, but that friend became a rather aggressive non-friend, and I always felt vaguely reluctant to read the book because of the associations. I'm glad I got over that and finally read it, because I loved it. It's not one of my favorite books or anything, but it was very good. I think I liked it as much as The Book of Atrix Wolfe, though the two books are very different.

I spent half the book crying.

Next I'm reading Alphabet of Thorn, written 30 years later by the same author (Patricia McKillip). And I bought (with Christmas money) three more McKillip books (The Changeling Sea, In the Forests of Serre, and Cygnet). I've got a bit of a McKillip obsession going on right now.

I can't remember much about the book -- I don't know if I've read it since I was sixteen or so. I think it's downstairs; I remember liking it, and feeling that it was not so much a fantasy novel as a fairy tale of some sort. But, that was half my life ago, so I can't remember any details, or if that was actually an accurate thought.

A fine obsession indeed.
