It's Kriffem Time

Woo hoo! Today I caught up on some of the old posts and comments I'd been meaning to respond to. Now I only have stuff from the past two days, so I'm feeling less overwhelmed. Of course, my email inbox is out of control (as always), but one can only do so much. :-)

Tonight Shannon and I are going Kriffem shopping. Must get my mom and brother their Kriffem presents so that we can get them in the mail ASAP. Still not sure what to get for the madre. We'll probably just go into a bookstore and get something random. She's interested in Paris, photography, troubled kids, serial killers, Madame Alexander dolls, and biographies ... so I'm sure we'll be able to find her something inoffensive. Maybe a book of photographs of Parisian serial killers with their troubled children's dolls.

Oh my god! Those are so cool! I think my mom would probably have me committed, though, if I gave her one as a gift. Though I did once give her a real, honest-to-goodness glass eye (from an antique shop) for Kriffem ... and, to this day, 8 years later, she still insists it was the neatest gift she ever received.

Blame my mom. It's all her fault.

:) Sounds like my family: "Guh'muff" is what passes for "Good morning" around here. (If someone actually says "Good morning," especially if they're smiling, they tend to get levelled with a glare that can curdle CoffeeMate.)

My mom, in particular, loves to make up words. So my brother and I grew up sharing a sort of secret vocabulary with her. She also takes lines from movies and incorporates them into her standard speech. So, for example:

Kriffem = Christmas

linner = the meal between lunch and dinner

Bunny Day = Easter (this comes from when I was studying French, and told her about the phrase "bonne idee", which means "good idea")

Clam Jumper = the restaurant "Claim Jumper", because my mom was convinced for many years that they only sold clams

Shitty Pizza = this is the boxed pizza produced by Chef Boyardee, which my father apparently used to greet (30 years ago) with the complaint, "Are we having that shitty pizza again?"

"Hot, hot, very hot!": my mom says this periodically when she's trying to say that something is very cool ... it's a quote from "Sixteen Candles"

"Road block, I guess": this must always be said in a deep drawl, as repeated in the movie "Starman", and is used any time there is bad traffic

"Little bit jumpy": this must always be accompanied by the odd, jerky hand motion which was used when this line was repeated in the movie "Starman"

There's lots more, but those are the ones that immediately come to mind. My mom also habitually sings the wrong lyrics to songs on the radio, and insists, "I'm singin' my own song!"

I like your mom. :) And now I have to recap all my college group's slang in my journal sometime. Nice meme!

Hey!!! Just a thought - I have a very large Madame Alexander doll collection and most of them are for sale. These are MOSTLY the 11" ones from the 70s/80s with the MaryAnne face. Look on this page for the index to pictures/summaries. I have most of them still available. Make an offer if there's anything you like. Those are the pre-post ebay paste ups. There's also floggers linked there, so not entirely work safe if someone is looking over shoulder. IF you get anything I can definitely priority mail it by the next day. Not trying to be pushy, but I saw Madame Alexander and figured it couldn't hurt. ;)

FYI, even though they say they're listed on ebay now- they are not. I just haven't updated that page lately.
