Christmas specials

I was searching on the TiVo today for my favorite Christmas specials from my childhood, so that I could set them to record.

I started off with "The Year Without A Santa Claus," because Heatmiser and Freezemiser are just way too cool, with their song and dance routine. ("I'm Mr. Heatmiser, I'm Mr. Sun. I'm Mr. Green Christmas. I'm Mr. Hundred-and-One." and "I'm Mr. Freezemiser, I'm Mr. Snow. I'm Mr. Icicle. I'm Mr. Twenty Below.")

Then I searched for "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," because Boris Karloff and Dr. Seuss are meant for each other.

And then I said, "Oh, I think I also remember liking one called something like 'The Christmas That Almost Wasn't'." (Though, upon researching it, the one I liked must have had a different title, because "The Christmas That Almost Wasn't" is a live-action cheesy movie that sounds completely unfamiliar to me.)

And then I stopped. And I reflected. And I commented to Shannon, "I seem to like all of the NEAR DISASTER! Christmas specials, where Christmas is in dire and immediate danger."

Huh.

I also like "It's A Wonderful Life" and "A Christmas Carol," in both of which Christmas is only endangered by our culture's obsession with money.

Then you should love, as I do, The Nightmare Before Christmas

Definitely definitely definitely! We own it on DVD, actually, and watched it on Halloween night. We'll probably watch it for Christmas, too.

What about "Santa Claus vs. the Martians"? Christmas gold, I tell ya. I'm a Christmas tv junkie, too. We watch all of the Peanuts specials and I've embarrassingly collected a lot of the claymation specials on tape. And, of course, Christmas just ain't Christmas without the muppets version of "A Christmas Carol."

I always liked Mr. Magoo's version of "A Christmas Carol," personally. ;)

Oh, and I also love love love "Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys," but they don't seem to be airing it this year. Very disappointing.
